Gesù, Unica Ragione del Natale

Just sharing my homily on Midnight Mass last Christmas to the some Italian Parishioners of Pretola. Translation is courtesy of Sr. Janites and her Italian co-sister.

A story was told before about a family who were looking for the wristwatch of their father. They were looking almost everywhere inside and outside the house. They could not find the watch. Until one time a monk was passing by. The father asked the help of the monk. The monk simply said, “Be still…”
Vorrei iniziare raccontando una storia. C’era una famiglia che aveva smarrito l’orologio del padre e lo cercava. I familiari lo cercavano dappertutto, all’interno e fuori della casa, ma non riuscivano a trovarlo. In quel momento un monaco passò e il padre gli chiese aiuto. Il monaco rispose semplicemente, “State fermi.”

The father asked the members of his family to be still and be quiet. After sometime, they heard something. “tick, tack, tick, tack, tack…” They tried to follow the sound. It was coming from a shoe box, and when they open it, there was the wrist watch.
Il padre allora chiese alle persone della famiglia di stare fermi e in silenzio. Ecco che dopo un po’, cominciarono a sentire qualcosa: «tic, tac, tic, tac…» Cercando di seguire il suono, si sono accorti che veniva da una scatola di scarpe, e quando l’hanno aperta, hanno visto l’orologio.

During Christmas we might have been preparing many things. We make decorations, we buy gifts, we make Christmas tree, we make a belen, we buy food and the like. I hope that in your preparations, you have included to prepare your hearts.
Durante questo tempo di Natale forse stiamo preparando tante cose. Addobbiamo la casa, compriamo molti regali, prepariamo l’albero di Natale, facciamo il presepe, compriamo cibo e molte altre cose. Speriamo che in tutto questo, abbiamo preparato pure i nostri cuori.
Durante Natale potremmo aver preparato molte cose. Decorazioni di natale di fabbricazione. Compriamo dei regali. Facciamo il treess di chistmas. Facciamo un belen nelle nostre case. Compriamo il cibo per la cena di mezzanotte.

Christmas is a joyful occasion. The birth of the savior is “Glory to God in the highest” according to the angels in the Gospel. However, the joy of Christmas cannot be experienced by everyone unless they heard this wonderful news. Let us try to reflect on what angel said to the shepherds.
Il Natale è tempo di gioia. La nascita del nostro Salvatore, secondo gli angeli del Vangelo, è “Gloria a Dio nell’alto dei cieli”. Ma, la gioia del Natale non può essere sperimentata da chi non ha ascoltato questo buona novella. Cerchiamo di riflettere su quello che gli angeli hanno detto ai pastori.

According to the angel, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord.12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Essi hanno proclamato, « Io vi porto una bella notizia che procurerà una grande gioia a tutto il popolo: 11oggi per voi, nella città di Davide, è nato il Salvatore, il Cristo, il Signore. 12Lo riconoscerete così: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce che giace in una mangiatoia».

Fisrt, this good news of great joy will be for all the people. It means to say that this news is not just for the shepherds but will be a news for all the people. As Christians, we have to ask ourselves, “Have I really received and lived this joy of Christmas. If I have received it, have I shared this joy to others? Sharing is not simply giving things. It means the reorientation of our minds that we are responsible to each other. In as much as we are joyful we have to make steps to let others experience being joyful as well. It is quiet sad that until now, many nations invest their money in armaments that can kill than to things that can give joy.
Primo: questa buona notizia di grande gioia è per tutti gli uomini. Significa che questa notizia non è soltanto per i pastori ma anche per tutti i popoli. Come Cristiani, chiediamoci, «Ho veramente ricevuto e vissuto questa gioia di Natale? Se l’ho ricevuta, l’ho condivisa con gli altri? Condivisione non è soltanto dare alcune delle proprie cose. Significa anche educare la nostra mente al fatto che siamo responsabili gli uni degli altri. Nella misura in cui siamo gioiosi, realizziamo iniziative concrete per far sperimentare agli altri la stessa gioia. Per esempio, è triste pensare che ancora oggi, tante nazioni preferiscono investire i loro soldi per armamenti che uccidono, piuttosto che per altre cose che possono portare gioia.

Secondly, “today in the town of David a Savior has been born for you; he is Christ the Lord.” Jesus is the one who had been prophesied in the days of old. He is the one that people had been waiting for. He is Christ. Jesus being born more than 2000 years ago is the Christ the Lord. In our lives today, is he really the one we are waiting for? Are we really not looking for other things aside from Jesus? Do we really treat Jesus as our Christ and Lord? Does He take the place of a King in our hearts? In every aspect of our life, is HE the one reigning-- in politics, economy, moral, social, cultural and the like?
Secondo. 11Oggi per voi, nella città di Davide, è nato il Salvatore, il Cristo, il Signore». Gesù è colui di cui i profeti avevano parlato. È Lui l’attesa del mondo. È il Cristo. Gesù, nato duemila anni fa, è il Cristo Signore. Nella nostra vita, è Lui che stiamo aspettando veramente? Non stiamo cercando forse altre cose al di fuori di Gesù? Lo riconosciamo veramente nostro Salvatore e Signore? Gli diamo il posto di re dei nostri cuori? In tutti gli ambiti della vita – politica, economica, morale, sociale, culturale - è Lui che regna dentro di noi?

Thirdly, “This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths…” and Being wrapped in cloths, means that this Jesus is like one of us. He is God yet also man. Just as every newly born child needs a cloth to warm his body so was Jesus. Jesus is not exempted from the limitations of a human being. Jesus can experience joy and pain as we do. Jesus can experience hunger and fill as well. Today, though knowing Jesus is Lord, do we believe that Jesus thoroughly understand our human nature? Are close to him? Or Jesus for as is detached and cannot understand us? Christmas is incarnation. Jesus share all things of being human except sin.
Terzo, Lo riconoscerete così: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce ». Il fatto che sia avvolto in fasce, vuol dire che Gesù è come noi. Egli è Dio ma è anche uomo. Come tutti gli altri neonati, ha bisogno di un panno per riscaldarsi. Gesù non è esente dalle limitazioni dell’essere umano. Ha sperimentato gioia e dolore come noi. Gesù conosce la fame e la sazietà. Oggi, pur riconoscendo che Gesù è Signore, crediamo che Egli capisca pienamente la nostra natura umana? Sentiamo che ci è vicino o pensiamo che sia molto lontano e non ci capisce? Il Natale è incarnazione. Gesù partecipa a tutta la nostra natura umana, tranne il peccato.
Lastly, “Jesus is lying in a manger.” A manger is a place where the ox finds its fill. Wherever the ox will go, it will always return to the manger because the ox knew that a manger means sustenance. The food will always be there. Jesus being in the manger therefore means that he is our sustenance. There is no better picture of this than what Jesus said in the last supper, “take this all of you and eat it, this is my body..take this all of you and drink from it this is the cup of my blood..” Jesus made himself as our food through bread and wine every time we celebrate the Eucharist. Jesus does not only want us to see him as apart from ourselves, but be inside of us up to marrow of our bones. Jesus wanted us to know deep inside of us up to gut that He is our only Joy. We can go somewhere else, but Jesus is sure that we will always go back to him to find what we are looking for.
Infine, «giace in una mangiatoia». La mangiatoia è il luogo in cui gli animali domestici trovano nutrimento. Dovunque essi vadano, tornano sempre alla mangiatoia perché sanno che la mangiatoia significa nutrimento. Ci sarà sempre cibo lì. Gesù deposto nella mangiatoia significa anche che Egli è nostro nutrimento. Nell’ultima cena abbiamo la realizzazione piena di questa immagine. Nell’ultima cena infatti, Egli disse, «prendete e mangiate, questo è il mio corpo… prendete e bevete, questo è il calice del mio sangue…». Gesù si è fatto nostro cibo nel pane e nel vino, ogni volta che celebriamo l’Eucaristia. Gesù non vuole essere fuori di noi, ma vuole essere in noi, dentro di noi. Vuole farci sapere e sentire veramente che è Lui la nostra unica Gioia. Possiamo andare altrove, ma Gesù è sicuro che torniamo sempre da Lui per trovare ciò che cerchiamo.

So this Christmas, may we experience its essence, so that we can openly share the fire of joy in our hearts to all the people around us.
In questo Natale, quindi, auguro a ciascuno di noi che possiamo fare l’esperienza profonda della sua essenza, perché possiamo condividere liberamente il fuoco della gioia del nostro cuore con tutte le persone che ci stanno intorno.
